Good Friday

I’m baacckk! And what better day than today to be here? 1) It’s gorgeous outside โ˜€๏ธ, and 2) the leader of the free world just keeps giving us reasons to regret being cognizant. But since we can’t do anything about that, for at least one day, let’s just pretend he doesn’t exist and focus on some goodness! There’s plenty of it.

  • BECK. His tour is stopping in Minneapolis August 17 for the first time in 9 years! Of course I went ham on Etix and refreshed for a half hour until 10AM in case anything happened without me knowing and snagged tickets. And that just reminded me of this homage he orchestrated, covering David Bowie’s Sound and Vision. It fills my soul with joy, literally, almost to tears. The menagerie of vocalists and instrumentalists is too much. Swelling, hopeful, joyful.

Anu and her family were followed by the BBC as it reported on funding for kids who need prosthetic limbs to pursue sports. NPR reports, “The National Health Service got a grant of some $2 million for that effort after last summer’s Paralympics, but the money was split between research efforts and the “active limbs” program, and further funding is in doubt.” To find out more or donate here in the U.S., check out Limbs for Life.

  • For some of you, this won’t mean squat because you were ahead of the game. For us here in Minnesota? FINALLY. Our Sunday liquor ban has been lifted, and I look forward to being able to buy whatever my heart desires whenever I want to all day Sunday.
  • So, when’s the premiere of Wonder Cat? ๐Ÿ˜น

Good Friday

  • CO-parenting at its finest. This warms my heart. It’s way too easy to get embroiled in broken families. Nice to see this one coming together!

โ€œIโ€™m going to help the homeless,โ€ said Silkia, 9, a third grader. โ€œIโ€™m going to get mad money, and Iโ€™m going to ask them if they want a shelter.โ€

Luz, 13, who is originally from the Bronx and attends seventh grade in Brooklyn, chimed in. โ€œOr I could just switch up your idea,โ€ she added. โ€œYouโ€™re going to work and have mad money. Then youโ€™re going to build a shelter for the homeless people.”

  • Spring is upon us! ๐ŸŒฑ And, cranking open the windows after a long winter reminds me of how I’ve been trapped in a cesspool for months. One of the projects on my list is cleaning out my freezer. Apartment Therapy has some tricks for how to tackle it in 20 minutes!
  • Look at this little dog leading a horse! Where would we be without animals? Nowhere, I swear. Seen on Tastefully Offensive.

Aparna Nancherla

I’m re-listening to Aparna Nancherla this morning. She is hilarious, but because everyone has different humor, and I’m rarely moved when people beg me to listen to something new, I can’t really sell you on her. All I can say is that you should spice up your day and give her album “Just Putting It Out There” a try. She has that sardonic twist that throws just the right amount of dry, grim introspection on things. Not Louis C.K. grim. Endearingly grim, with chuckles and mirth. She probably does have weird self-esteem, but she knows what she’s saying, plus she’s a comic so what else is she going to toy with? Check her out on Spotify, Bandcamp, or YouTube. I’ve included an extremely entertaining clip below where people in her acting class compare her to Aziz Ansari and… science. ๐Ÿ˜น

Good Friday

  • A messenger of peace is just what we need right now. (And always.) “Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai has been named the youngest ever UN Messenger of Peace, with a special focus on girls’ education.”

  • If you’re a fan of Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products and have thought to yourself while washing your hands or scrubbing the sink, “I wish I could smell like a frond of rosemary…” Now you can! Mrs. Meyer’s added a line of body wash and soap, and there’s hand lotion somewhere on there.
  • Should You Be Laughing at This? is by an Icelandic humorist who draws stick figures with twisted mirth. It’s irreverent, but as Amazon says, “Of course, Iceland is a country whose national drink is called ‘Black Death,’ national dish is putrefied shark meat, and national literacy rate is 99.9%. That may give you a small idea of the dark but brilliant mind behind the shamefully addicting cartoons in this book.”

  • Saw this a while ago, and it’s probably one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen on the internet besides cats. I’m a fan of Run the Jewels and at one point they made a video for Rookie Magazine called “Ask a Grown Man,” answering questions from young girls about dating and self-confidence. I wish Killer Mike was my dad and El-P was my brother. โ™ฅ

Good Friday!

โ€ข Plants make people happy. The Sill delivers low-light flora to your door! And don’t worry if you don’t have a green thumb. The Sill says, “Itโ€™s our mission to be your dedicated source for indoor plants. You can shop, learn, or work hand-in-hand with a dedicated Plant Specialist on a plant design and maintenance program.”

โ€ข Good sleep is a valuable but often rare necessity! Here are some smart things to do before you hit the hay to help lessen distraction, calm your nerves, and send you off into a restorative night of snoring and dreaming. (Unless you’re like me and have insane dreams that cause you to question reality and wake up relieved none of it was real. But that still means I slept well.)

โ€ข Johanne Rahaman is documenting Florida’s black communities through candid and vibrant photography. Black Florida “reinterprets marginalized communities from the inside, through the storiesย of the residents, and offers an alternateย concept of abundance, home, and community.”

โ€ข The song is dumb, but the dancing is lit. If only we could all cut loose like this man. I mean, we can, but how many of us do?

AND…

โ€ข Cute and true.
